THE HISTORY - Raglan Holiday Park Papahua
Set on the edge of beautiful Whāingaroa / Raglan Harbour, Raglan Holiday Park Papahua has long been part of the area’s story as a place where people come to rest, connect and enjoy the coast. The park sits on reserve land at Papahua, a special part of Raglan that remains closely tied to the harbour, the town, and the wider community.
Holding A Deep Importance
The story of this place begins well before holidaymakers arrived. The wider Raglan area was originally known as Putoetoe, and the harbour as Whāingaroa. For generations, the harbour and surrounding land have held deep importance for mana whenua, including Tainui Awhiro, Ngāti Tahinga, Ngāti Māhanga and Ngāti Mahuta at various times.
Over time, Raglan became known as a coastal destination where families and travellers could slow down and enjoy a simpler holiday close to the water. The holiday park grew from that tradition, becoming a much-loved base for campers, caravaners, families, school groups and visitors wanting an authentic Raglan experience. Today, the park continues that legacy by offering a wide range of accommodation in a setting that feels both peaceful and close to everything that makes Raglan special.
A Continued Legacy
As Raglan has evolved, so has the holiday park. Formerly known as the Raglan Domain Campground or Te Kopua Holiday Park, the site is now managed by Waikato District Council with governance support from the local board structure, reflecting its long-standing role as a community asset as well as a visitor destination.
Recent years have seen thoughtful development across the park, including new accommodation and group facilities opened in partnership with Waikato District Council, Ngāti Māhanga / Hourua, the Papahua Camp Board, and the Raglan Community Board. These additions have helped the park continue to serve not only holidaymakers, but also school groups, reunions, events and community gatherings.
Raglan Holiday Park Papahua Today
The spirit of Papahua is still visible in the way the park operates today: welcoming, grounded, family-friendly and connected to the place around it.
That connection is reflected in projects such as Papahua Maara Kai, the park’s community garden, which highlights a shared focus on care for the land, sustainability and community wellbeing.
While much has changed over the years, the heart of Raglan Holiday Park remains the same — a relaxed coastal place where generations of guests have made memories by the harbour, and where new stories continue to begin.
